2021 ELAR Winners

Our Spring 2021 English Language Art and Reading classes had a challenging writing prompt this semester! All classes from 1st grade to 6th grade had the same prompt. It was a verbose writing prompt similar to STAAR writing prompts where students must showcase not just their writing skills but their attention to detail and focus. All students did a good job. Not all essays were perfect, however you can tell there was great effort and focus in writing these essays. Our teachers are incredibly proud of all the students.

First place winners
were picked for their strengths in the following categories: completion of all work, clarity, grammar, creativity, originality and neat handwriting.

Honorable mention winners
were picked for their improvements in writing which could be found in the same categories of: completion of all work, clarity, grammar, creativity, originality and neat handwriting.

We know many students do not enjoy writing. Some students dislike the different components of writing like grammar, spelling and vocabulary. However, these same students may enjoy different complex components of math problems. We encourage all students to not be intimidated by the writing process. Following the stages of writing and our ELAR lessons, everyone can be a strong writer! After all, with writing you can find amazing ways to express yourself, your opinions and fantastic stories!

2020 - 2021 Virtual Class Update

Like you, HHCS has been closely monitoring the developing effects of the virus, state mandates and Texas Education Agency guidelines and updates. Hua-Hsing Chinese School foundational principle has always been to provide a challenging and safe environment for all our students to thrive. To do so, our Board of Directors has decided to teach our Fall 2020 semester classes online. We believe teaching online provides the greatest security and prevention of COVID-19 spread.

For 31 years, Hua-Hsing has taught exclusively in classrooms. Our Fall 2020 classes will be held only online. Where we hold our classes have changed, but our principles, curriculum and traditions remain steadfast. Our staff and teachers have been working tirelessly testing and adapting to online classes. As classes begin, we may continue to adjust the online feel to better teach our students. We will also deal with technology pains and technical issues. This Fall semester will need a greater family commitment than semesters past.

Our amazing staff has been busy testing and revising our curriculum since March. As our student, the teaching, curriculum and materials will feel familiar as our high standards remain the same. We understand that online learning is very different than classroom learning.  In class, we will have planned breaks to allow students to interact, ask questions, use restrooms or simple opportunities to refocus. For the older students, chat function will be available to type in questions as the teacher teaches. These strategies will hopefully help the students who are discouraged by online learning. Before the start of school, your child will have a “Meet the Teacher” where he/she will be able to attend like class. Your child will be able to practice signing in, meet the teacher and learn of the online tools.

We are incredibly grateful for our families who travel near and far. To best protect everyone, face to face lessons are not an option. The Board of Directors will make a decision in the wintertime to see how Spring classes will be held.
